Personally, I find zipped dmg's annoying. The difference in size (i.e.
transfer time) for a compressed dmg vs. a zipped compressed dmg is
inconsequential. I don't think I've ever seen it larger than 5%, and it
more often hovers around 2%. If it takes an hour and a half to download, a
2% a difference is less than 2 minutes. If download takes a minute and a
half, it's less than 2 secs difference. Believe me, no one will notice.
The difference in usability, however, is high. You can't use zipped items
directly. You first have to unzip them, delete the zip, then use the newly
created file. If downloads safely unzipped on reception, it wouldn't
matter. They don't, so it does.
I recommend distributing just a compressed dmg, and leave external zipping
for other deployment models.
