Re: How to get Java 1.6

I think you guys are being apologists for Apple here. Java 6 has been available for over a year on every major platform. If you consider HPUX or even IBM's Java to be major platforms you're living in some bizzaro land.

As an aside and for whatever it's worth, you must realize that IBM's Java is very definitely a MAJOR platform in the real world - quite possibly the most "major" in terms of installed licenses in the server space. I work for a company that pays for several thousand licenses of the various WebsFear products, and I could quickly rattle off at least a dozen other such very large companies. (Think banking, insurance, defense, manufacturing - traditional big businesses.)

The large bulk of the applications are 1.3-era; some are 1.4. A few bleeding-edge vanguard fringe projects are daring to use 1.5.

That is the real world of big enterprise installations with real server licenses that pay serious money for them.

I think 1.6 is largely used by small shops writing desktop java apps aimed at a windows user base. Not to detract from the value of that, of course, and I am also rather saddened that Mac developers are left behind and in the dark with respect to the latest and greatest... but in "the real world," nobody uses 1.6. The real world is barely catching up to 1.5.

Not to mention that Java really hasn't caught on much as a desktop application platform. There are a couple notable exceptions, but not many. Java's reign is the plumbing under the web apps, and in that arena it's all still barely 1.4 - 1.5.

Cheers,
Chris
