I think 1.6 is largely used by small shops writing desktop java apps aimed at a windows user base.
Not to detract from the value of that, of course, and I am also rather saddened that Mac developers are left behind and in the dark with respect to the latest and greatest... but in "the real world," nobody uses 1.6. The real world is barely catching up to 1.5.
Not to mention that Java really hasn't caught on much as a desktop application platform. There are a couple notable exceptions, but not many. Java's reign is the plumbing under the web apps, and in that arena it's all still barely 1.4 - 1.5.
