Re: How to get Java 1.6

I think 1.6 is largely used by small shops writing desktop java apps aimed at a windows user base.

If that's true then why are there so many Swing jobs in Investment banking?

Not to detract from the value of that, of course, and I am also rather saddened that Mac developers are left behind and in the dark with respect to the latest and greatest... but in "the real world," nobody uses 1.6. The real world is barely catching up to 1.5.

Not to mention that Java really hasn't caught on much as a desktop application platform. There are a couple notable exceptions, but not many. Java's reign is the plumbing under the web apps, and in that arena it's all still barely 1.4 - 1.5.

I beg to differ. I reckon half the world's trading support software for investment banking, oil, etc is written in Swing, the other half is split between .NET and totally bizarre solutions like X over XDMCP via HummingBird. What alternatives are there for high-performance, real-time software?

As you stated, the target platform is only Windows. When 1.6 came out, we found a performance increase of about 30% for our applications. All other functionality aside, that is enough of a reason to motivate a company-wide desktop upgrade to 1.6.

1.6 may be considered cutting edge in the server world, but it's no longer a big deal on the desktop.

Brendon.
