Re: How to get Java 1.6

I think 1.6 is largely used by small shops writing desktop java apps aimed at a windows user base.

If that's true then why are there so many Swing jobs in Investment banking?

You've identified a niche; I'm talking about majority. Even in that niche, desktop java is really only a small part of it.

I beg to differ. I reckon half the world's trading support software for investment banking, oil, etc is written in Swing, the other half is split between .NET and totally bizarre solutions like X over XDMCP via HummingBird. What alternatives are there for high-performance, real-time software?

The last time I worked in that area (2 years ago), the two biggest trading apps on the desktops of the traders were Fidessa Workstation (written in TCL of all things) and Bloomberg Workstation, which was a web application. I guess the TCL app falls under the category of "totally bizarre solutions." The web app is more in line with the rest of the world.

1.6 may be considered cutting edge in the server world, but it's no longer a big deal on the desktop.

I understand this and agree with you. The point I was trying to make is that desktop Java doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Try to step back a bit from your specific situation and look at the entire software industry. There is _almost no_ desktop Java. Again, there are a few notable exceptions: LimeWire, Runescape (an applet!!), Azureus, the Java IDE's, and apparently some trading applications.

Having said that, I truly _like_ Swing. I like Java, and I want 1.6 on my Mac too. I wish I could make a living writing Java apps on my Mac. I hate doing web apps with the passion of the burning sun... but that's where the paycheck is.

Cheers,
Chris
