I think 1.6 is largely used by small shops writing desktop java apps aimed at a windows user base.
If that's true then why are there so many Swing jobs in Investment banking?

I beg to differ. I reckon half the world's trading support software for investment banking, oil, etc is written in Swing, the other half is split between .NET and totally bizarre solutions like X over XDMCP via HummingBird. What alternatives are there for high-performance, real-time software?
1.6 may be considered cutting edge in the server world, but it's no longer a big deal on the desktop.
