| Argh. I just upgraded to Leopard, not realizing that Java 6 would stop working. Bleah.

At the risk of sounding too much like Devil's Advocate here, I think that you have to step back a little before breathing fire over the missing Java 6.
One of the core tenets of Leopard was to deliver 64-bit Java in order to maintain the capability of Java as a platform in sync with the rest of Leopard (see -d32 and -d64 command options under leopard). My immediate thoughts are that that transition alone would be better undertaken using a Java version that is well known, and relatively stable under Tiger, as a starting point than to add any additional risk by adding Java 6 into the mix, particularly when there have been recorded issues with the Java 6 Preview 1 and updating prebindings causing problems with Rosetta applications.
For me, I'm willing to wait a couple of weeks even a month or so to get Java 6 even if it's Dev Preview 2, rather than have a really buggy Java 6 where they've taken two things (64-bit and Java 6) on at once.

Until Apple provides evidence to the contrary, I will make the assumption that Apple will NEVER provide Java 6 for ANY Mac OS, either 32-bit or 64-bit, and I will make my purchasing and development decisions accordingly.
Further, I urge anybody on this mailing list to make the same assumption. Silly rationalizations like "Apple is working on it" or "It'll be out in a week" and based on wishy-washy fanciful thinking, and not on any concrete information.
+1 - I'm just waiting for a few days to see whether Java 6 appears, then I'll start moving away from Mac OS X. I've spent thousands of euros in Apple gear for my lab and I'm absolutely unhappy of what I'm getting back. Also, I'd kindly ask people to stop with the thread "who needs Java 6": some of you don't need it? Fine. Now, please be aware that the rest of the world doesn't necessarily have the same requirements as you. Other people need it, Apple is 10 months in delay and this is betraying the explicit promise Apple made a few years ago about delivering the best platform for Java, that was part of the reasons I decided to switch to Mac OS X. --
