Fair enough. However, it's quite likely that this was written to accommodate some quirks of older VMs (which we must continue to support with our applet). So I was hoping someone here might remember which VM had that problem.

Not me, but you might consider checking the relevant Java source code:

In the end, there's no documentation more definitive.
