You can.

Probably the most comprehensive way is via AppleScript Studio

http://www.apple.com/applescript/studio/

It came with your mac as part of the dev tools (Xcode etc).

You can also use things like the python bridge and a few other things.

All good stuff.

I expect there are ways of sending Apple Events from Java too, but for a basics, look at:

Also, open the app Script Editor ( in /Applications ), and open iTunes dictionary. From here you can see what iTunes exposes to AppleScript.

For a higher-level control of iTunes scripting, you might also like to try Automator ( also in /Applications ).
