Depending on how confident you feel about building your own PC, you
could have a PC without an OS by buying all the components separately.
Some shops might even build it for you (I know for sure that many do
that in Paris).
The other solution might be to go to your nearest supermarket or
similar store, buy a PC with all the things you don't need and install
linux over all this. You might even be able to get a refund on what you

If you develop in Java, the choice of which linux distribution to
install shouldn't change much (although I'd recommend to use the Sun JDK
at least at the beginning).

I like the triple boot idea - testing gui apps has to be on the 'real
thing', and sometimes in the 'real' language for some, which is why I
have XP in English, French and Japanese :)
