Yeah, I wonder how big a job that would be?
I'm guessing about 4 man-years. It's a total thumb-suck but I bet
you I'm right.
Porting OpenJDK to Mac OS X is something that I have in mind for many
months. ;-)
But instead of guessing with thumb-suck, could we seriously start thinking
about it (sometimes I even wonder if Apple just hopes that such a project
could be started) ?
Imagine how nice it would be : you could have the latest JDK almost at the
same time as Sun's one ! You could run OpenJDK on any version of Mac OS X
(maybe even on iPhone) ! A public road map with noooo more NDA and secrecy
!
What is required ? Let me start a list :
- Check Unix non graphical native code can run under Mac OS X
- Port AWT
- Write Mac OS X Swing Look and Feel
- Integrate OpenJDK to Web browsers (plugin and things like that)
Things and people that may help us :
- Quaqua project should help us a lot to write Mac OS X Swing Look and
Feel
- SWT Mac OS X version and the team that wrote it
- Can we imagine getting some help from Sun ? After all, they decide to
employ two persons to port Open Office to Mac OS X...
- Can we imagine getting some help from Apple ?
