Re: porting OpenJDK to OS X

4 man-year (i assume 4 man working full time) = 20 man-one weekend day-years (for obvious reason, we simply cannot work on full time for this)

Simple estimation tells me that nobody will do it as it may take 20 years for one to finish. But if we have 20+ persons interested in, the job could be done by the end of next year.
And we will have a very happy holidays.

But more realistically what your estimation of man-one weekend day-years?

Yeah, I wonder how big a job that would be?

I'm guessing about 4 man-years. It's a total thumb-suck but I bet you I'm right.

Porting OpenJDK to Mac OS X is something that I have in mind for many months. ;-) But instead of guessing with thumb-suck, could we seriously start thinking about it (sometimes I even wonder if Apple just hopes that such a project could be started) ?

Imagine how nice it would be : you could have the latest JDK almost at the
same time as Sun's one ! You could run OpenJDK on any version of Mac OS X
(maybe even on iPhone) ! A public road map with noooo more NDA and secrecy !

What is required ? Let me start a list :
- Check Unix non graphical native code can run under Mac OS X
- Port AWT
- Write Mac OS X Swing Look and Feel
- Integrate OpenJDK to Web browsers (plugin and things like that)

Things and people that may help us :
- Quaqua project should help us a lot to write Mac OS X Swing Look and Feel
- SWT Mac OS X version and the team that wrote it
- Can we imagine getting some help from Sun ? After all, they decide to
employ two persons to port Open Office to Mac OS X...
- Can we imagine getting some help from Apple ?

I'm looking forward your comments
