Random question:
Have you timed simply making a INT_ARGB_PRE image vs making a INT_ARGB image?  I seem to recall seeing a significant difference in that alone if the image was large enough.  I may have a trick to improve that if that's an issue.

Have you tried using ImageIO to read similar JPEG / BMP files, just to compare?

If the G5 JVM is interpreted only, that could be an explanation. Another point would be to check whether there's an embedded ICC Profile in images (I don't know if PNG support this) and what it is.
