Re: Java on Leopard report

The performance of 1.6 over 1.5 is much better, plus bug fixes (and probably some bug additions, too :-) )

We have some results for our FastPak product on the following link:

http://www.scsc-online.com/Products/TestData.html

Forget about the "FastPak" column unless you know what it is and look at the column "Dedicated JVM Results" which is how most people run apps, and compare Java 1.5 against 1.6 on Windows, and Java 1.5 against 1.5 with Linux. In some cases, particularly with Linux (and OS X is more likely to perform like a Linux OS than a Windows OS because of the kernel structure and threading used) the performance gain is significant.

As an FYI, performance using 1.4 is so bad compared to 1.5. or 1.6 on any platform we didn't even bother putting the test results in.

Hope this helps,

Bill Wagner

So how about a technical discussion here? I see little or no
technical advantage in the use of Java 6 on the Mac platform, barring
bug fixes. What in the world is in Java 6 that suddenly makes it so
vital?

Bill
