Re: Leopard Boot Camp to run Java 6

You don't really need bootcamp to launch an older version of MacOS X. Just create another partition with the version of MacOS X you wish to use and then you can switch to it using the 'Startup disk' system preferences. Heck, if you still have a PowerPC based system you can even use that to boot into MacOS 9.

In order to run Java 6 on my Mac, I've decided to investigate using Leopard's Boot Camp to run another OS so that I can have Java 6. As upset as I am with Apple, this is a much cheaper short-term solution than purchasing new hardware.

Since I have only 1.5 Gb of RAM on my iMac, I'd rather not run that other OS under VMWare, especially not when I'll be using a memory intensive application like NetBeans.

Dual-booting is a real pain in the ass, but I've done it before on my PC (Windows and Linux).

I heard that people were able to install Linux on the Boot Camp beta, but I have no idea if this will work on Leopard Boot Camp.

I'm well aware that Apple only officially supports Windows installations. I simply want to know if it will work or if others have tried it.

I also need to decide whether to install Linux (probably Ubuntu) or OpenSolaris (SolarisExpress Developer Edition), which is a decision I won't take lightly.

For several reasons, including product activation, security, and privacy concerns, I've ruled out using Windows.
