The OpenGL pipeline is not present in Java 5 for Leopard.

It's possible. The performance characteristics of Quartz and Sun2D are quite different. In general, with the shift to Sun2D, graphics performance characteristics on Mac OSX should more closely match those on Windows. But some apps may lose performance based on what they do. Please try enabling Quartz to see if that fixes the issue.
