I need some clarification on OpenGL.  Is it being said that JOGL apps will not work?  JOGL puts a wrapper, native calls, around OpenGL.  How does OpenGL even know it’s Java?  Is this a permanent degrade?

Don't worry, JOGL still works. The "OpenGL pipeline" is a way to take advantage of OpenGL even when using Swing and Java2D; on Sun VMs can be enabled with -Dsun.java2d.opengl=true.
