A patch for this problem is now available at <https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=199020>. If you know how to rebuild the eclipse launcher, check out the project org.eclipse.equinox.executable and have at it.

I am looking at this. We made changes in how the 'startOnFirstThread' argument is interpreted, and I need to contribute those changes back to Eclipse.
