I hesitate to get into this, but I think this needs to be said:
I THINK APPLE'S JAVA TEAM IS TERRIFIC!
On two occasions, I've logged bugs against Java, and in both cases,
they implemented my suggested changes. When was the last time a
company as large as Apple fixed a bug because *ONE* software developer
reported it? It simply doesn't happen. Sun's "bug parade" stretches
to the moon and back, and if you don't have thousands of votes, you're
not going to see any action on your bug for years. I've logged bugs
and feature requests against iTunes and other Apple software, and
they've never even acknowledged them.
Apple's Java team, on the other hand, really seems to care about us.
Sure, Steve said something dumb about Java on the iPhone, and sure,
1.6 is late (just like Leopard was late). But the level of support
that we Java developers see on the Mac is SO MUCH BETTER than we'd be
getting if Sun was responsible for the OS X port, or if, god forbid,
Apple dumped the responsibility on the Open JDK crowd, very few of
whom even own a Mac.
Given the alternatives, I prefer things to stay just as they are!
