Just a another, more pragmatic point-of-view on the java discussion:

supporting as many platforms as possible.

read the 10.5 Java 5 release notes. delight, as i did, in the fact that Apple's Java team seems to understand the importance of (a) making applications that have paid no attention to Mac OS fit reasonably well and (b) allowing those developers who do care _painlessly_ add Mac-specific tweaks.

i haven't seen the tech note yet, but from the sound of things, 10.5's Java 5 addresses *loads* of problems (most of the ones i've ever reported, certainly) and -- from what i can tell -- in an ideal fashion.

no, it's not the Java 6 we all want, but it is a lot of high-quality effort moving things in a healthy direction. i'd say the importance of both kinds of port looks to be well understood, much more so than in the past. i'll be able to dump a lot of custom code thanks to 10.5's Java 5, and get better results for my trouble!

(and unlike last time, i'll try to remember to keep a copy of the last version meant for 10.4 for the benefit of people who don't/can't upgrade ;-)
