Re: In defense of Apple's Java Team -- and Sun

Henry,

Thanks for the insightful response. As a student of the computer industry for over 45 years, I agree with your conclusions. Apple began as a closed system as did many others in the PC industry. IBM (of all companies!!) opened it up. We know the results.

Still, as your analysis suggests, marketing to the /hoi polloi/ requires a different approach. Their eyes glaze over when confronted with technical data.

Most people don't know the difference between Java and JavaScript -- even many who consider themselves to be technically proficient.

I had thought Apple broke with its past when it released OS X for the first time. Wow, an Apple OS based on open source and, even better, on Unix. As a longtime Unix developer, I was impressed. Keeping Java on the Mac in the dark hearkens to the old dark side of Apple.

Apple gets to choose between ignoring developers and concentrating on iPod, iPhone, etc. Or, it can keep its Mac audience by listening to the developers and becoming more open with them. I'm guessing that one of the closed strategy managers has found his or her way into the Java development group. If so, that's really too bad. The latest missive from the Java Lobby people indicates that the damage may already be very great. Apple will have to move fast to make amends or kiss their once-loyal developers goodbye.

This closeness lends itself better to marketing, because a marketeer can play with the minimum of information available to get people to see what faith demands. Hence the constant "have faith" terms bounced around here. The problem is that if faith is lost or put in doubt there is nothing else to go on, and so fear follows closely and dramatically in its heels. Hence Apple developers will tend to be either extreemly faithful or not be there at all.
