Yes. And. This. Is. The. Problem.
Apple doesn't speak. I got burned on an iPhone purchase, burned with
the announcement of PowerPC to Intel (I purchased what later turned
out to be the final PPC 12" PowerBook) - and now, reading the tea
leaves, we're about to get burned with Java. I'm tired of this type of
behavior.
I love Tiger, but Apple has shown that if it isn't the newest shiny,
it gets zero support. Tiger is about to become the red-headed
stepchild.
My friend wants to buy my iPhone. I'm going to sell it to him.
I'm going to install Gentoo on my PowerBook. Why? Because even IBM has
a PPC version of Java 6 that was updated in August.
I don't write apps exclusively for the Aqua interface tie-ins. And I'm
guessing most of you don't either. It's nice and all to have nice
shiny round buttons, but I rely on _cross_ platform ability. Write
once, run anywhere. Can't do that with Apple Java SDK - at least while
they lag behind other platforms.
