For example, if you switch it to 1.6 and your shell reports you are using 1.6, do you still need to export JAVA_HOME to the 1.6 home directory (or set it in the /etc/bashrc)?

Alternatively, should you be able to export JAVA_HOME set to 1.6 in your /etc/bashrc, restart your shell and have it use 1.6?

Apologies if this is old news, but I can't find the information.

Yes, $JAVA_HOME is not set for you automatically. Would a tool like a '/usr/libexec/java_home' to simply print the full path to the user-preferred $JAVA_HOME be useful? Perhaps a .bashrc could check for it's existence, and set $JAVA_HOME to whatever it's output is...?
