The /etc/bashrc, /etc/environment or a user's .profile would do it for me (I would also like to be able to set it with a bash startup script). Mostly I would like something that is documented clearly and easily findable. If it was an /etc/environment I would think the java preference tool could read that on boot and set it to what was defined there. But really, I haven't used a mac for about 4 or 5 years (and only for about 24 hours now) so I am sure you guys know what is best. best, -Rob
