Re: Supplementary Text

Thanks everyone for the prompt response.  :)

The link Rob provided is really great; I encourage everyone who's interested in this to have a look:
http://code.google.com/p/xswingx/

(Take a look at the webstart demo.)

I much prefer this to an Apple feature-enhancement, because, well, I'd rather have a solid cross-platform implementation.

Also thanks to Shawn for providing the exact name (at least according to Apple).  I still haven't found any exact guidelines for usage, but I'll just use my best judgment.

I've only ever seen it used when an additional hint is needed about what a field is, or what it does, or what form it takes. The "new account" sheet in Mail.app also uses this for the email address line, and shows "email@hidden" to give a soft clue to the user what a valid email address is.

I wouldn't want to use it as a replacement for labels (since after you fill out the field, it is impossible to distinguish the fields from each other).

And herein lies the potential danger of over-usage. I've seen these things also in Address Book.app when editing contact data. In all those places it is justified, but I hope developers would not get tempted to start replacing good old fashioned labels with it. But anyway, that is just a thought, for sure not a reason not to provide it.

This looks really interesting, and I think other developers will find this useful.

Definitively.

I'd even be interested in adding it as a default feature to Aqua text fields, if you set a "JTextField.inPlaceHint" client property with the string you want to appear inside. If anyone would like to file it as a feature request at http://bugreporter.apple.com, we'll let you know if we put it into a developer preview.

I'd actually like to see Swing support it. This is a significant aspect of GUI functionality that should never (in my opinion) be present on one platform and not on the others. If I would start to use this, I would just make a cross platform solution, and not rely on any LAF for it. As for the feasibility of requesting this from Sun, well, I honestly have no idea if it would get it anywhere...
