I know of no prefs files that could preset the "os.arch" property of the JVM, except one, and I've never thought to try presetting that property. If there's a different preference or property than the one I'm thinking of, you really need to get your user to tell you what it is.
First, I assume this applet doesn't have JNI code, because a misidentified arch might cause some havoc with the selection of which code to run from a fat Mach-O jnilib. Or maybe not. Again, I haven't tried lying to the JVM about native architecture, so anything's possible.
I also assume this applet is running in a browser, because if it were running under JWS, I don't think you can preset the "os.arch" property to lie about the architecture.
