I have confirmed that in our case it works correctly on every 32- bit Mac, and fails on every 64-bit Mac -- even though 1.4.2 is a 32- bit JVM. I should go verify the JRE version numbers. Both the 32- bit Macs and the 64-bit Macs involved are using Java for 10.5 Update 1, and I *assume* that the JRE version of 1.4.2 is the same in both cases, but I want to verify that.

I'm not sure why at 10.5 you still have users on java 1.4.2 but it sounds like you have a good reason to encourage them to get to 1.5. Bug fixes that far back probably aren't going to happen. Even if it's a recent architecture change that's causing it.

fwiw

java14 -version
java version "1.4.2_16"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_16- b05-303)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-86, mixed mode)

is what I have current for 1.4.
