I had a chance to get more details today about the problems loading Java applets after a PPC to Intel migration. The user got Apple involved in the troubleshooting, and they told him to delete the entire preferences folder. As the user described, many different problems with the new computer disappeared, including the
inability to run Java.

I've never run into problems of this sort on a Macintosh because I've never tried to migrate settings to a new computer. The description reminds me very much, however, of the sorts of things that went wrong when I tried to upgrade a Windows XP computer to Vista. It was a total disaster, but after I did a clean install of Vista things worked fine (aside of course, for the inherent annoyances of Vista, which I detail at http://www.segal.org/vista/).
