Re: Google Chrome and Java

Apple's treatment of Java is ridiculous. They simply don't take it seriously anymore.
More and more people are moving to Java6. Leopard still supports PPC/PPC64/x86/x64, and they only release Java6 for ONE of the supported architectures.
Why should they leave supported architectures behind? I could understand if they did it with the Snow Leopard release, which is focused on 64-bit technology.
The only hope is that Apple will be releasing their GUI glue to OpenJDK, so we can have someone who cares about Java (Sun, or a team of open source enthusiasts) deliver a quality Java platform for Mac OS X in the future.
I love the soylatte initiative, but it's not integrated with the graphical subsystem. It's my only hope though, as I'm using a 32-bit Intel mac. (Who thought that Apple would leave me behind so quickly?)

Apple has stated that Java 6 is and will be 64-bit Intel only. To paraphrase... they made the jump to 64b and aren't going back.

Also Java SE 6, Java SE 5 and Java 1.4.2 are getting updated but that is about all I can say about that...

/me points at Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 2 Developer Preview
