Yes, the Java implementations are not up
to date and if I recall the pre-OS X times, I fear that Apple's
strategy might be to not develop for new Java releases.
Oh really, is it that bad?
Sadly, I'd have to say yes. The story really is, as you point out
yourself, that 6 is in beta - i.e. not available to consumers. In
other words: there is no Java 6 on Mac OS released yet, and that is
September 2008. IIRC, Java 6 was released at the end of 2006 -- that's
quickly nearing two years ago (and that's computing years - who knows
what it makes that in dog years...)
After Java 1.4 came out on MacOS, about a year and a half after the
release on other systems, there was widespread comment along the lines
of "yes, we know it took a long time, but now we have out codebase up
to date, and we have caught up, and from now on it will be much
quicker".
Only, we're not seeing that, are we?
