One is required to have multiple boot partitions to test multiple versions of Java due to Apple's decision to bind each Java release to a specific OS version (if you want a different Java version you need a different OS version, and thus another partition). There are both pros and cons to that choice, but the bottom line is that that is the way Java works on the Mac so one needs to cope with it. We'd *still* be waiting for J2SE6 if Apple had been required to make it work on Tiger, 32-bit Intel and PPC too. I remember the wait for Java 1.3, and the wait for 1.4 -- things are improving on the release time front.
