applet so installing ImageMagick wouldn't be good but if there was something

I don't believe it is, though you could make Preview.app do it using applescript. On the other hand, you could bundle imagemagick with your app and unpack it into a temp directory to execute it. I've done this before with other small commandline apps (and even using different jars for different OS versions) quite successfully. However, if you can find a viable ImageIO plugin I'd use that before going the exec() route.
