I have done (1).

I have not done (2) but I will give it a try and report the result.

I'm afraid I can't contemplate the nightmare of a (3), a clean install, at
the moment. Maybe later. In any case I think it's likely that that would
succeed, since I believe my (and others) problems are the result of a broken
Java installation. The issue however is, how did it get broken in the
absence of any explicit "bad" behavior on my (and others) part?
