It's unlikely that Java 6 is contributing to the NetBeans crashes. The crash log clearly shows 1.5's java being executed. For one example, see the following archived post.

set
(list all environment variables in effect)

The 'printenv' command lists environment variables. The 'set' command lists ALL shell variables, which includes ones that aren't in the environment.
