question about Leopard's JFileChooser

since upgrading from MacOS 10.4.11 to 10.5.5, i've noticed that invoking JFileChooser will spin up all my Firewire drives. this is regardless of the initial directory configured prior to invocation, and also regardless of the/any caching involved - ie, it does it *every* time.

Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_13-b05-237)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_13-119, mixed mode, sharing)

any ideas anyone? toasting my external drives doesn't really sound like a good idea...
