I stumbled over that one when I started using VMware on Leopard. Every time I touched one of my VMware images, Time Machine obediently backed up the entire multi-gigabyte image, which destroyed system performance and rapidly filled up my backup drive. I had to add the VMware image files to Time Machine's exclusion list, then remember to back them up manually from time to time.
