view3ds is some source code I found online which does this. I can't remember
if it worked on the mac when I found it, but I do have a version of this
which does run on the mac.

If I remember correctly, this code reads a 3ds file and then generates a .c
and .h file for code which displays the shape using opengl. I think it
worked ok for this purpose.
