Writing your own export plugin is definitely the best way to get models from
your 3d modeler, but I'm afraid you're wrong about LightWave plugins...
LightWave SDK is cross-platform and is prepared to work with a wide range of
compilers, so to write a plugin you can use almost anything from MPW to gcc.
There's a special chapter in LW SDK docs which will tell you how to compile
SDK and plugins with various compilers.

Besides, LW plugins have nothing to do with Carbon...
