render to depth texture

Using a pbuffer under CGL, is it possible to render straight to a depth texture? I want to render to a depth texture, and then feed that back as a input a shader. If possible, I want to avoid doing a needless copy from the GPU to the CPU and then back to the GPU. I'm running an ATI 9700, in case that matters. If render to texture is not supported, what is the most efficient way to effectively render to a depth texture?

thanks!
