Loading vertex arrays in the graphics card ?

I am wondering how I could load an array (or even more than 1) of vertices (and related colors, normals, tangents, texcoords) into the memory of the graphics card, once and for all. I thought glVertexPointer (and its friends) and glDrawElements did just that, but actually it seems like glVertexPointer only gives a pointer to OpenGL, and vertices are loaded with glDrawElements. What can be used then ?

Thanks !
Fred
