Floating Point vs Fixed point APIs, Performance

I'm looking at implementing a cross-platform GUI-like framework using
OpenGL, and for possible embedded and OpenGL ES use it would be better
to use fixed point APIs as much as possible. Anyway, is there a big
penalty hit with MacOSX OpenGL to use fixed point operations (this
because my main target is AU component/application UI work, but it
would be neat to cross-compile it later to embedded systems using
OpenGL ES)? If it's marginal then I would just use fixed point as much
as possible. Is the fixed to float taken care of by the GPU?

There could be artifact issues due to resolution, but that's another
issue. Anyway, any info appreciated, thx, Kent
