Why would you want to use makefiles at all on the Mac? I know you
can, but on the nicer environment you might as well take advantage of
the graphical tools at your disposal.
Speaking only for myself, of course, but
1) not everyone agrees the graphics tools are nicer,
2) some people just prefer the simpler (older, more familiar) way of
doing things,
3) some people like being able to use the same tools everywhere,
3a) some people feel it's better to become an expert at a few tools
than to be mediocre at many tools,
4) others have already noted the cross-platform advantages of makefiles,
4a) it's a lot easier to get management to agree to try an OSX port
if the makefiles can be reused.
As someone who still codes with vi, makefiles suit me just fine.
