Ok, I've carved out the time to submit the best radar I can for a
system-wide freeze some of our NVIDIA Mac users are seeing.
rdar://problem/5936925
* SUMMARY
Certain NVIDIA-based Macs are experiencing a system-wide lockup/freeze
after running our OpenGL-based app, requiring a physical/hard reset in
order to recover, resulting in potential data loss.
* STEPS TO REPRODUCE
0) Use a Mac matching the specs of system A or B (see below) -- NOT C.
1) Download and install the free trial version of WhiteCap 5.1.1 from http://www.soundspectrum.com/whitecap/download.html
2) Start iTunes, and select WhiteCap to be the active visualizer and
start it (View -> Visualizer -> WhiteCap) in windowed mode (vs. full
screen mode).
3) Run for 5-10 minutes.
* RESULTS
After 5-10 minutes, the entire system (i.e. all apps) will become
unresponsive. Spinning beachball is movable but remains. Command-tab
doesn't switch apps. Hard reset required. All applications running
at that time are inaccessible. Motion in the Whitecap window freezes.
* REGRESSION
The app (WhiteCap) doesn't use shaders or any fringe OpenGL
extensions, so it's difficult to speculate. Two customer's hardware
profiles are attached that are exhibiting the freeze in addition to a
NVIDIA Mac we have here in the office that does NOT exhibit the
freeze. See the below and the URL for the full hardware reports.
System A (exhibits the freeze):
- Mac OS 10.5.2
- MacPro2,1 (Quad-Core Intel Xeon)
- NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 (OpenGL 2.0 NVIDIA-1.5.24)
- (Full hardware report attached)
System B (exhibits the freeze):
- Mac OS 10.5.2
- iMac6,1 (Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.16 GHz)
- NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT (OpenGL 2.0 NVIDIA-1.5.24)
- (Partial hardware report attached)
System C (does *NOT* exhibit the freeze):
- Mac OS 10.5.2
- MacBookPro4,1 (Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4 GHz)
- NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT (OpenGL 2.0 NVIDIA-1.5.26)
- (Partial hardware report attached)
I've posted an archive of the said hardware profiles on a personal
server for convenience:
Note that systems A and B are customer's machines, so we're very
limited with respect to trial and error and getting detailed developer/
first-hand insight. Please help!
* NOTES
- The issue occurs even if our software isn't running inside of iTunes
(it's just that the free trial version of our software doesn't come
with this "standalone" version). Upon request, I can send the paid
version of our software to any Apple or NVIDIA engineers if using the
standalone version would make life easier for troubleshooting/debugging.
- We ship this software product (WhiteCap) for intel, ppc Mac OS X as
well as under Windows (under Visual Studio), so we're pretty confident
that the issue is on the OS/driver side, since we've seen no
indications of any problems on ATI-configured Macs or under Windows.
