Which ldap?

We're going to go "whole-hog" with OS X lab deployment this Summer, and our biggest hurdle is figuring out how to authenticate the workstations as we don't have an Active Directory server, an OS X Server, and only a rudimentary, still-in-development ldap server.

The ldap admin alleges that we can't authenticate OS X to our ldap server because it's running openldap version 3 and OS X's NetInfo stuff is only ldap v2.

Can anyone here confirm/refute this and, if the latter, please provide me with "ammunition" in the form of URLs?
