Re: Mac OS X computers restarting

Hi Jan,

A better question would be what is better 1) for the users and 2) for
the people maintaining the computers (keeping the users happy). If you
have users/staff already trained to shut things down (we do) that may be
best. Leaving them on has maintenance advantages if you intend to use
them. If these computers have CRT monitors and/or generate a lot of heat,
shutting them down or at least setting the monitors to sleep may be a
good idea. We once had widespread failures of monitors and power supplies
in a PC lab when A/C went out over a weekend in an open lab (in Texas, in
the summer). Not fun. Not good for hardware. Not good for users or
support personnel either when 1/6 of the lab is down for hardware
repairs. We have since had A/C failures elsewhere, and staff now knows to
shut things down (some servers included) until service is restored.

My $.02,
Charles
