Re: Mac OS X computers restarting

While there are good arguments on each side, we shut off our computers each night and on weekends. For several reasons, which don't apply to all labs.

I like decreasing the energy usage. We are open a little less than half the hours in a week, so by turning off our machines, we can contribute a few kilowatt hours to slowing global warming, decreasing pollution, etc. This emotional desire on my part is probably the strongest reason for my decision. Personal choice. We also set them to shut down after 30 minutes idle time.

We frequently get ugly voltage spikes, and rarely get horrific ones. We have surge protectors, so I have never lost a computer, although many others on campus have. Turning off our computers when not in use cuts our exposure to bad electricity by more than half.

By the way, we also encourage our users to shut down the computers during the day, or to restart if they begin using a running computer. The main reason is historical- under OS 9, the chaos afflicted by the previous user might impact the current user. We have continued the practice and our users have continued the habit under OS X.

Asking our student staff members to make sure all computers are off when they close the labs means that they walk around and look at each computer. This visual inspection is valuable for locating problems, graffiti, system freezes, and other problems, which might otherwise go unnoticed for days.
