This is an issue that will never be resolved to everybody's
satisfaction. I know that many consumer-level hard drives are not
designed for a 100% duty cycle. Also, whether or not you are putting
drives to sleep at night, keep in mind that the drives are likely to
outlast their own usefulness anyway. I'm sure that spinning them up and
down ten times an hour is not good for them, but once or twice a day is
not likely to reduce their useful lifetime, even if you only replace lab
machines every 4 or 5 years.

But that's mostly just my opinion, and of course I could be wrong.
