Hey Jan.
We are still running 10.2.8 on our lab machines as well. I have them set to
put the display to sleep after 15 minutes, and the hard drives after 1 hour.
It's my understanding that allowing the hard drives to "sleep" cuts down on
the wear of having to spin at operating RPMs constantly.
I have experimented with a freeware application called "Kutdown" which gives
you the ability to schedule shutdowns, restarts, or sleep sessions. Here's
a link to download it if you're interested:

It seems to work great on our test machines. I have not deployed it
throughout the lab as of yet.
Hope the helps,
Matt

Subject: Mac OS X computers restarting
JUST finished cloning 10.2.8 onto our lab computers. Can't afford 10.3.
When
we were 9.2.2, we shut down the computers every evening and the they
restarted
every morning. But I want to know what is best for the computer when
running
OS X.
Should we leave them up all of the time, shut them down every evening,
shut
them down on Friday only?
TIA.
Jan
