AppleScript question: "select"

[Thank GOD I'm not going to be dealing much with OS 9 soon!]

I have been having problems server-side with aliases. (It's a netatalk problem and I know what it is, but it's just not practical for me to fix it mid-semester.) Upshot: Assimilator's alias fix post-download BREAKS several aliases, no matter how many times I re-create them on the server.

So I threw my hands up and created an AppleScript that runs at login (by virtue of being in the Startup Items folder the contents of which get executed at login by MacAdministrator). It's supposed to delete the aliases for Photoshop in the Launcher Items Folder and then re-create them from the original.

By inserting numbered dialog boxes between each step I have isolated the problem to the following line:

select file "Adobe Photoshop 7.0" of folder <insert path here>"

This instruction is given immediately after "tell application finder activate"

THE PROBLEM: Sometimes it does what it's supposed to: select Adobe Photoshop.

Sometimes it actually EXECUTES Photoshop!

But only sometimes.

Can anyone here tell me why that would happen?

Thanks,
...ROMeyn
