Re: Volume mount applescript - ruminations of dubious value

It seems likely that the problem stems from the 10-connection limit with AppleShare. Since Jim can connect the 10th client via Chooser, I speculate that there is some difference between Chooser and the way the AppleScript Mount command is interpreted. Unfortunately, I don't have anything but lame guesses about what or why. My least irrational guess, is that the volume mounted on the server is counted as one connection, when you use the mount command. Anyone have any other ideas?

I don't remember if the Chooser is scriptable, but if it is, it might be interesting to try a script that connects via the Chooser, instead of your mount volume command. Perhaps there are other scriptable connection methods as well.

When we upgraded our server to AppleShare IP 6.3, which requires OS 9.1 or higher to run, we faced the same problem with Keychain preventing automatic connections. Being clueless, it tooks me months to find a solution (during which we went back to OS 8.x and AppleShare 6.1, I believe). I found out that downgrading the AppleShare client to version 3.8.3 (on the client machines) would allow the automatic, Keychain-free, server connections that we wanted and had always enjoyed under previous OS and AppleShare Server versions.

This is the system that we run now, in our remaining OS 9 lab. All the 24 client machines connect to the ASIP 6.3 server on startup, based on the Chooser check-boxes- the same approach which we had used up until the server went to OS 9.x.

I don't know if that could work for Jim, since it sounds like he doesn't have the ASIP piece of our puzzle. It might be worth a try.

All works fine except for the baffling fact that the script will
only mount 9 clients. There are ten clients in the room, and the
last one to boot always returns an error message. The same last
client can then be mounted manually from the chooser. Any ideas on
this?
