Caller ID

Hi all,

I'm interested in making an application that shows the phone number on the computer screen, when the phone rings.
I already subscribe to the caller-id service here in Denmark (at TDC), so now I just gotta get a modem that can report the caller-id.
So I thought, it might be an idea, to check out if I already have a modem capable of reporting caller-id.

I tried downloading Z-Term and sending the following commands...

AT#CID=1
ERROR
AT%CCID=1
ERROR
AT+VCID=1
OK
AT#CC1
ERROR
AT*ID1
ERROR

Okay, it seems that the built-in modem in the PowerMac G4/DP 867 actually supports the +VCID command, so it probably recognizes the caller-id.

Now right after issuing the +VCID=1 command, I tried dialing myself.
On 1st ring, nothing happens.
On 2nd ring, nothing happens.
On 3rd ring, I get the "RING" response from the modem.
Yet another 2 rings, nothing happens.
On 6th ring, I get the "RING" response again.
This repeats, so on 9 rings, I only get 3 "RING" messages, and *no* caller-id information.

I expect some of these responses from the modem:

"MESG="
"NAME="
"NMBR="
"TIME="
"DATE="

-So my question is: Is the built-in modem in the G4 able to detect and return the caller-id information, or do I have to buy an external $150 USB modem for this ?

If you have any information about how to make this work, I'd appreciate very much, if you could give me a hint. ;)
-If it's not possible, however, I'd like to ask Apple to improve the modem, so it detects both the caller-id information and the call waiting ("knock") information.

I also tested 2 programs that were supposed to show caller-id, but I didn't have any success with these.

Furthermore, I have a question about how to "share" the modem. If I use the modem for connecting to the internet, for FaxSTF and want to use it for caller-id as well, would it then be possible to just make my caller-id program capture the responses from the modem only ?
-Would the FaxSTF or Internet Connect occupy the modem, so I would sometimes lose some responses ?

Love,
Jens
