no login

i have got the mas os x server used it as the server for some time
due to some changes in work I used the machine with mac os 9 only

i need to set it up as a server again
i know my login and password - i am pretty sure

but mac os x server won't let me login, neither as a user nor as root

how can i change to password without just reinstalling everything and
loosing the old information ...??????????
