No root access to B/W OSX Server

Hi.,

I need a solution to an unusable B/W OSX Server. I installed Tenons
iTools and after a restart I no longer have root access to the machine. I
have restarted in single user mode and tried to reset the password using

passwd root 'password'

but this doesn't work. I know I'm in as root, because whoami tells me so,
but the command passwd (on its own) gives me;
user root not found in netinfo

Is there a way of resetting the password or do I have to reinstall
everything from org. CD!!
